November 2000

Dear Alumni,

Another year has come and gone, and so much has happened. As I have just returned from my 30-year high school reunion in October (arrgh!), I realized my need to stay in touch has been reaffirmed. Even though few in my class attended, there were loads of familiar "people," and that was very nostalgic. Being with my sister (for her 20th) and seeing teachers from the past (alive and well!) and watching the high schoolers play ball (and recognizing some of the names on the jerseys!) brought back warm memories. Yes, I, too, graduated from a small school.

Last January our vice principal returned to Northside, and "our" Stephanie Mickey was named to replace her. Stephanie, of course, is a Lackland graduate, and she is doing a super job. Kay Wyatt and Pat Flieller retired in May. We "gave up" the sixth grade when the elementary school split to create the elementary and the intermediate schools. This was done in anticipation of the influx of families into the new housing areas (the privatized housing on Medina) and the construction near school. We are "sharing" our junior high wing with the intermediate school until construction decisions are made. Lots of room changes have occurred to accommodate these temporary needs, but we are all still here!

We hired a math teacher, a special ed teacher, a science teacher, and two new secretaries. Penny Southwell moved, and Linda Morales is the Registrar. Mr. John Smith's wife replaced Mrs. Flieller; that makes two Mr. Smiths and two Mrs. Smiths on our small campus!

Last year was also filled with sadness. Eric Kelps, Class of '99, who assisted with technology here at Lackland, was killed in a car accident in the fall of 1999. Mrs. Stacey, our superintendent, passed away unexpectedly January 12, 2000. These deaths left us very saddened because we lost two souls dedicated to education and to Lackland. As you know, no one did more for this district than Mrs. Stacey, and her legacy will live on as we strive to continue to create her "Camelot" for military children.

Mrs. Stacey was replaced this past summer by Dr. David Splitek from the San Antonio ISD. We are getting to know him and sharing with him what we are all about and why we love it here. He has some big shoes to fill, doesn't he? (I'm sure Mrs. Stacey would chuckle watching him try to get her shoes on!!)

Gerry Norvell, Class of 1979, has done a phenomenal job working on the electronic info. I have been blown away by his knowledge and expertise. He tells me that a number of ex-students have worked together to create the website for all former students. Mike Gorton, class of 1976, hosts the site. Jeff Forcum, class of 1979, designed the layout. Gerry manages the content and maintains the database. There are almost a thousand former students listed, with almost 600 of them "found." If you cannot find a classmate on the lost or found lists, send a request to Gerry with the name and class and any other information you have. The lists are intended for ALL former students, not just the alumni! Many of you did not get the opportunity to graduate from Lackland!. Contact Gerry at info@lackland.org. If you have not yet registered your electronic address with Gerry, please do so ASAP. You can reach any of us here at Lackland by e-mail by knowing the first initial and correct spelling of the last name. My address is lyon.c@lackland.k12.tx.us. Also, if you have not yet registered on an alumni site, take a look at a couple; I have and it's fun. (You may need to check "Lackland High School" and "Stacey High School.")

I have a horn to toot here at Stacey High School. Last spring Mrs. Carol Frawley won a science award and also received a KENS-TV ExCEL Teacher Award. Perhaps you saw her on TV. The coverage was super! Not surprising, last year's seniors asked her to speak at graduation, which she did. We are fortunate to have Mrs. Frawley and other dedicated faculty here, as you well know!

Dear Alumni,

As a newcomer to Lackland ISD I really appreciate the tradition of excellence that this school district has built over the past forty-seven years. I encourage you to keep your ties with the Lackland Independent School District and with your classmates. Our lives seem to get busier and more complex with each passing year and one way to maintain a sense of balance and meaning is to stay grounded with the strong roots of friends, teachers and traditions that helped put us where we are today. We all look forward to a better future and, at the same time, honor the friends and colleagues from our past that helped prepare us to do and be our best.

Good Luck in All that You Do,

David Splitek
Superintendent
