December 1992

Dear Exes:

Greetings from Lackland High School! As always, things are hopping around here, and I want to catch you up on "where it's at."

We have a new principal this year. Mrs. Linda Lang came to Lackland from Cole High School, Ft. Sam Houston. (Now, you see, that gives us a female Superintendent, high school principal and vice-principal, elementary principal and vice-principal!) Mrs. Lang has been instrumental in making several changes. We shortened the periods and added a 7th period for activities. We have classes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; then, students have the opportunity to participate in Student Council, Humanities Club, Future Homemakers of America (new!), UIL contest teams, yearbook, newspaper staff, band, etc.--during the school day!

We have several new classes--we have Honors and Advanced placement classes as well as Academic Decathlon--the needs of the Gifted/Talented are being met in several areas by the various teachers. It seems to be going well.

There are a few changes in faculty on our horizon. June Smith sold her home and joined her husband in Arkansas, so Dan Antrobius came from Methodist Hospital to serve as our librarian. He is also a registered nurse, which is a great "plus." Jim Carroll took Nancy Clayton's place as band director. Our school has provided some instruments, and our band membership has really grown. Mrs. Barajas moved to Houston this summer--her husband transferred jobs--and Mrs. Staggs joined her husband in Panama. Warren Schumaker replaced Mrs. Barajas, and Janet Schwenk is the new secretary to join Mrs. Zook in the office. Dee Alvarado has rejoined our staff as an aide.

Lackland now offers French I and II. Natalie Kutach, a newlywed, is the teacher and cheerleading sponsor. Mr. Schumaker and Mr. Antrobius sponsor the Academic Decathlon. Mrs. Sparks retired early, and her room was transformed into a computer lab.

"We oldie goldies" are still at Lackland. Carol Frawley was recently named Region @la Teacher of the Year--and Region XX covers a lot of territory! We are really proud of that honor for her.

Perhaps the "newest great" news is the bill recently signed by President Bush approving money for a new high school. Yes, we have heard it for years, but it appears to be a reality within the next couple of years. Mrs. Stacey has worked really hard for a long time to get this done, and I have no doubt she will work equally hard until the new doors are opened. We have a got a lot to look forward to.

I recently had a nice surprise when I found out that Laura Bargelski, Class of '80, works in Abilene with my brother and sister. She asked about a 1980 yearbook and to my shock, Mr. Millett had one to sell her! So, if you have special requests, it can't hurt to ask. Also, one of our newest substitute teachers here is Tammy Workman Edge, Class of '81, and a member of our PTO executive board. Her children are students in our elementary school. Amy Apodaca, daughter of Jerry ('76) and Elva Martinez Apodaca ('77), was part of our junior high school and has just recently moved north. It is exciting to have the second generation with us--but it ages a few of us, too!!

For all of you interested in homecoming, put January 8-9, 1993, on your social calendar. The games (against Randolph) are Friday at 5 p.m. (JV) and 6:30 (Varsity). Join us Saturday night at the Officers Club from 8-12 p.m. for the dance. As usual, coke bar and hors d'oeuvres are provided, and a photographer is available. Tickets are $12 single/$23 couple and are available from Mrs. Frawley or at the door for Exes. The 1993 theme is "THE DANCE" by Garth Brooks. We would love to see you there!

I hope our letter finds you well and happy. We wish you the best during this holiday season as it welcomes in the new year. Let us hear from you and help you in any way we can.

Cordially yours,

Mrs. Cynthia Lyon
