Lackland Junior-Senior High School
November 1994
Dear Lackland Graduate:
Another year has come and gone, and as usual, several changes have occurred. Last year we graduated several foreign exchange students--two from Russia, one from Germany, and one from Brazil. This year we have another senior from Germany. What richness they bring to our classes and lives.
One faculty change this year has been because of Mike Demchsak's wedding this summer. He and his new wife are in Chicago. He was replaced by Cynthia Ryan, who was Mr. Poludniak's student teacher a couple of years back. And, yes, we have great fun with "Cynthia Ryan" and "Cynthia Lyon"--she even lives close to me near Helotes! Mrs. Austin continues as our high school counselor, and Sherry Kassai is now our junior high counselor. She has been in our elementary school for several years. New aides include Arlen Bruce (mother of '94 graduate David), Pat Garza, and Elena Gonzalez. The office staff has changed, too. Warren Hensley (father of '93 graduate Heather) and Linda Morales are the office workers. Mrs. Zook is now an elementary PE aide and loves it! Mrs. Havel is back in the front office, and the counseling center is in a different portable building. Mr. Poludniak and Mr. Siguaw became fathers last year--a first for both of them.
Another big change this fall has been our block scheduling. We now have 90-minute class with A & B days. Each class, in other words, meets every other day. Although some of us tend to stay confused, it seems to be working great. Labs can actually be completed. Keyboarding classes are covering two lessons per session, but with less time used to set up, warm up, and put up, we seem to be completing a lot! We still use the no-bells system, too.
This school year will see the ground breaking for the new junior high-high school. I am sure completion will be a couple of years down the road, but it is something to look forward to.
Enclosed you will find a copy of a memo sent out to the members of the Lackland Teachers Association. Our scholarship fund was renamed last year, and cards are available if you wish to make a donation to the fund in honor/memory of someone. It is a great way to re member Diane, a graduating senior, and the one for whom the card is purchased.
I hope you are already making plans for homecoming. We have had such wonderful attendance by the exes the last couple of years; it really sends you down memory lane. We "dinosaurs" still at Lackland enjoy it when our exes return with a few gray hairs (or a few of them missing!) and a few extra pounds and kids and stories to tell. We love it!

Plan now to attend!
Mrs. Frawley had a brilliant brainstorm last year, and we would like to know your ideas: our Student Council sponsors an annual Career Day where 8-10 speakers come and give a 30-minute presentation three times (to three different groups of students.) Jim Jones, a San Antonio policeman, has spoken to the students, and they loved it. Wouldn't it be fun to have a Career Day (in May)- made up of only LHS graduates? What a way for you to share your career field and interests with our undergraduates (grades 9-12 only). If you would be interested in being a Career Day speaker, please return the enclosed information so that we can try to work out details next spring. We would love to have your participation.
If you want addresses of classmates so you can organize a reunion group or get in touch with old friends, please let me know. Jim Jones always provides me with a roster, organized by graduation year, so it is easy to share the addresses we have with you. Remember that we are here for you. We enjoy those cards and pictures and notes--so keep them coming!
Hope all is well with you and that we will see you at homecoming or hear from you soon.
Cordially yours,
Mrs. Cynthia Lyon
