November 1995
Greetings to our Exes!
The faculty and staff at Lackland High School hope that this year has brought you many good things. We have enjoyed hearing from many or you this year.
it you are within visiting distance,, you might want to make an extra effort to stop by this school year and visit your old school. You see, we broke ground for our new school last month, so hopefully our new facility will be completed in less than two years. Portables were relocated this summer. We are now parking in the commissary parking lot and getting a bit of exercise daily. Song Avenue has been reshaped already. Yes, things are a-changing!
Last May we experienced a bit of history. one of our graduates was Robert Dudding. If you recognize the name, it is because he is the son of one of our former students of yesteryear, Brian Dudding, Class of 1976.
Several oldie-goldies retired last spring: Betty Pritchard, Jan Austin, Joe sparks, Edwinna Janert, and Melvin Martin. Linda Lang now works in Central Office, and Pat Havel is our new principal. Many of you remember Mrs. Havel as a math teacher next door to me, and then she became our vice-principal a few years ago. The elementary vice-principal, Judy Stahl, is wearing the hat as our VP, too. Joe-Sparks was replaced by a retired LAPD, Bob Warden. We have a couple of new positions this fall-reading specialist Christine Sollers, and behavior specialist Tim Garcia. Betty Pritchard was replaced by one of our own, Stephanie Mickey, Class of '87. Michelle Masters, our English/ journalism teacher who moved to Dallas last summer, was replaced by a newlywed, now teacher from Baylor University, Heather Wood.
This summer at a state Business teachers' conference, I bumped into sue Dunn, who came to Lackland as an art teacher in 1974, the same year Mrs. Wyatt, Mrs. Chandler, and I came. She now teaches computer-related classes at the Gary Job Corps in San Marcos. in October, Richard Kilmer, an ex-economics teacher, brought several foreign officers from the Defense Language institute (at Lackland AFB) to observe our classes. He has been with the DLI since he left LHS. (I wonder if he still has that famous gum jar?!) Life never stands still, and neither do we!
Now,ror all of you that we hope to see at our homecoming '96, add this to your activity calendar:
Friday, January 26 - Lackland vs. Brackett
JV game - 5:00 p.m.
Varsity - 6:30 p.m.
High School Gym
Saturday, January 27 - Homecoming Dance
Lackland Officers Club 8:00 p.m. - 12 midnight Photographer available
We hope this gives you enough time to plan your social life so you can join us. Not only have we had a good crowd at the dance, we have had great strolls down Memory Lane together after the basketball games on Friday night. Come celebrate and reminisce with us whenever you have a chance.
As always, Jim Jones and I are here to help you with addresses of old friends. Let us know how we can help you. May life continue to go well for you.
See you soon!
Mrs. Cynthia Lyon
P.S. The excitement is mounting here as we view the construction of our new buildings. This is a dream finally coming true for many of us, and we realize that this school would not have been possible if it were not for the love, dedication, determination, political knowledge, and tenacity of one particular person, Virginia Allred Stacey.
We feel that this is the appropriate time to acknowledge the exemplary contributions that Mrs. Stacey has made to the children, community members, and employees of the Lackland I.S.D. Therefore, we have asked the Board of Trustees to take under consideration the renaming of Lackland Jr.-Sr. High School to Virginia Allred Stacey Jr.-Sr. High School.
The people of this district will forever be indebted to Mrs. Stacey, and we feel she deserves more thanks than any of us could give. Thus, we do not take this recommendation lightly. It would be an everlasting symbol of our gratitude and respect, and we truly feel that she is a person of such-profound character and achievement that it would be a privilege to teach in a school bearing her name.
