Lackland Junior-Senior High School
November 1996
Greetings to our Exes!
The last year has been an exciting and eventful one. , First of all, please note the "new" address on the stationery. Yes, we are in the same, spot (for now!), but because the new administration building receives all our mail, and since everything is going to be facing Bong Avenue, the post office delivers all the mail to one spot.
Thanks for all the responses to the renaming of the new high school. Presentations to the School Board included the sharing of your responses and a short speech by Jim Jones. The board voted UNANIMOUSLY to name the high school Virginia A. Stacey High School, a part of Lackland I. S.D. Believe it or not, the vote left @. Stacey speechless! The name will be changed next year when we move into the new buildings. Several of us have been at Lackland for a number of years, and the change, admittedly, will be difficult. However, the tradition of excellence will not change, and what a great way to pay tribute to a Lackland educator that has been an advocate for our students for years. Few realize the countless hours Mrs. Stacey spends in Washington, DC, working for our benefit. A number of us are all too aware of the fact that our funding finally came largely due to Mrs. Stacey's tenacity (i.e., stubbornness and unwillingness to give up and give in!). I will proudly continue my teaching career at Virginia k Stacey H.S. in Lackland!. S.D.!
Our school was honored last school year by being named a National Blue Ribbon School. Less than 300 secondary schools received this recognition in the entire United States, so we were very excited.
As we watch our new buildings going up one by one, we are becoming quite nostalgic about the past. in order to preserve some of our history, a time capsule was prepared and presented May 16, 1996, to be put in the cornerstone of one of the high school buildings. It will be opened May 16, 2016. Mark this on your social calendar and plan to be there! Each class put a momento in the capsule; a lists of grads (yes, your names), scholarship recipients, sports award,-, recipients, as well as a school T-shirt and other memorabilia were also added. A few of us hope to be there again when it is opened.
For those of you that have asked-the trophies and wooden name plaques are now in my room-all of them! They are awaiting renovations and new homes in the new school.
A few employees left last year-our junior high counselor Sherry Kassai and teacher Mike Siguaw. Counselor secretary Cindy Reynolds is now in the elementary school. Elizabeth Bremner has returned to us from the Houston area to be a English teacher, and new Vice Principal Alan Reaves is another great addition to the staff.
On a sad note, we lost two of our teachers last year. Gayland Wofford passed away due to heart trouble while doing something he loved--deer hunting. Barbara Sparks, retired teacher, passed away from cancer. Both have been greatly missed, but their memories will remain with us for years and years to come.
August 3 was the date of the 1975-1976 reunion, and what a day it was! Folks like Donna (Beck) Granato, Lee Etheridge, Carole (Caporale) Arias, and Jim Jones worked hard to gather addresses and spread the word. What a success! Families came from as far as Hawaii to reunite and rekindle friendships. We can all only hope that it won't take another 20 years to get everybody back together. However, if it does, plan for it to be May 16, 2016!!
1 hope that all is well with you and yours and that you will plan to attend Lackland's homecoming in 1997:
