MEMORY OF MR. HALL
My name is Sylvia Carmona. I remember taking Spanish with Mr. Hall in the 8th and 10th grade. I left Lackland in 1976 because my dad was stationed in Spain. Taking Spanish with Mr. Hall helped to prepare me to know enough Spanish to get by when I needed to order something in a restaurant or purchase something.
WHAT I AM DOING NOW
I graduated from Zaragoza High School in 1978. I started college, but dropped out after 2 semesters. I worked in a day care center during that time. I went to work in a credit union after I left college and I stayed in the field for almost 12 years. I did well. I became the Head Teller of the cash department. In 1992, I felt like I needed to do something more fulfilling. I went to work at Boysville, a children's home in Converse (near Randolph). I have been there 10 years this month. I live on the campus also. I love my job!!
I did go back to school and I got an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts in 1997. I am now attending Southwest Texas State University full time (as well as working full time) and I will graduate with a BSW in May of 2003. I plan to go to graduate school to earn an MSW either in June of 2003 or 2004. I am president of SWT Phi Alpha National Honor Society for Social Workers. I am also the vice-president of the Organization for Student Social Workers.
I also plan reunions for the high school that I graduated from. I have hosted and planned 5 reunions and I am doing them every two years now.
I never married, but came close once. I have no biological children to speak of, however I have helped to raise over 100 children. I still keep in touch with several of the ex-residents of Boysville. When people ask if I have children, my reply is that I am blessed with many children in my life.
