The Obituary

Have you any rivers that you think are uncrossable; have you any mountains that you think cannot be moved. God specializes in things that are impossible, and He can do what no other Holy Ghost power can do.

It was on February 11, 1964 that Lewis Ivory Nicholson, Jr. was the first born son to Lewis, Sr. Nancy Lee Fox Nicholson in Manhattan, New York. It was a prophetic time that Lewis, Jr. would be an anointed one to sere God and share His goodness to all generations. His parents shared this prophecy and taught Lewis all of the wonders of God. Lewis was also born with another gift… the gift of singing and praising God. Even as a child he was often using his vocal talents. People would be in awe when they heard him sing. He cherished these gifts and gave his lift to Christ at a young tender age becoming a member of Holy Tabernacle Church of Deliverance and continued to share his talents throughout his youth. Later he became a Sunday School teacher and Youth Pastor.

Being the son of a military family, he traveled extensively and met many wonderful people. Lewis, Jr. remembered the times he spent in Limestone, Maine where children would get out of school each year to pick potatoes, in addition to the many cold and snowy, days. Some of the other places he remembered so well were his father attending training at the Air Force Academy in Tucson, AZ, being stationed in Colorado Springs, CO, and Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX.  Lewis, Jr. graduated with a very small class from Lackland Jr/Sr High School in 1982. Although Lewis, Jr. spent time traveling with his family, he would always enjoy coming home to Virginia where he could be with his cousins. He was a "clean-cut" guy always well-dressed. Lewis, Jr. had a charm about him that no one else could match.

Lewis, Jr. continued his education with determination. He was graduated from Christopher Newport College (now University) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Governmental Administration. He developed his professional career working at Ferguson Enterprises as a Showroom Consultant This career allowed Lewis, Jr. to cultivate his talents and develop remarkable acumen in business matters. Lewis, Jr. would a/way{s talk about going to school to become a funeral director, but often times family and friend thought that this was a bit morbid.

Lewis, Jr. was a true entrepreneur and lived his life to give to others. His benevolence was evident through his smile and natural charisma. He was so big-hearted and embraced everyone or/to made contact with him. Many may not have known that he was a licensed and ordained minister of God. Lewis, Jr. shared his musical talents with many churches on the Peninsula and served faithfully with the Music Ministry of Holy Tabernacle Church of Deliverance and First Baptist Church Morrison. He will be most remembered for his ability to encourage participation and playing the tambourine.

Lewis, Jr. attended and graduated Summa Cure Laude, from John Tyler College with a Degree in Mortuary Science and obtained his license as a funeral director. He prayed and realized his lifelong dream becoming the Founder and Co-owner of Nicholson-Cummings Funeral Home in Hampton, VA. This business was built on a philosophy of ministry in meeting the needs of people. Lewis, Jr. was a member and 2nd Vice President of the Tidewater Funeral Home Association and the secretary for the Central District Funeral Directors Association. He was also a member of the Virginia Mortician's Association where he was one of the directors for the Gospel Ensemble who performed at the Association Convention in June 2006.
